March 2010 Service Project

This month we will be collecting and assembling hygiene kits for the orphanages in both Djubiti, Africa and Baghdad, Iraq.  All of these children are in need of new toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap, combs, etc.  Whatever is brought in will be divided into individual kits and packaged for shipment.  Remember...  We have over 300 children that will benefit from our generousity

Serving Children in War Torn Communities

The Kiwanis Club of California’s Global Friendship is one part of Kiwanis International, a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one community and one child at a time.

Unlike most local service clubs that perform service locally, this club is a ‟single service” club, focusing solely on Serving Children in War Torn Countries.  By working together here at home, we can support our soldiers abroad in their mission of re-establishing humanitarianism, developing working relationships with locals in foreign lands and emphasizing the moral good of Americans.

We meet once a month to “pack boxes”.  Members donate items specifically requested by our soldiers– that range from wrapped hard candy to school supplies to softballs to umbrellas.  Each month the focus is a different selection of items.  USPS Flat Rate large boxes are stuffed to the brim, sealed, labeled and mailed.

When the boxes reach their destination, soldiers distribute the items to local children at schools and orphanages in th their area.  Our first year, 2007-08 we shipped 50 lbs of of candy to Iraq.  Our 2nd year we shipped 691 lbs- 434 lbs (48 boxes) to Iraq and 157 lbs (22) boxes to Africa. We have already shipped 32 lbs (6 boxes) to Africa and 15 lbs (1 box) to Afghanistan.

If you are interested in California’s Global Friendship, we encourage you to learn more about us here on our site and welcome you to join us for a meeting. Check our Activities Calendar for information about our next meeting day, time and place.
